Hampshire is known for its pleasant countryside, wooded stretches, open downs and pastoral vales. Nestling amongst this scenery in the valley of the Northern River Wey lies the town of Alton.

This thriving town has been the home to traditional markets for more than 1000 years. It has the most valuable market recorded in the Doomsday Book and today the town reflects this heritage through the interweaving of its Medieval, Tudor and Jacobean buildings with the Georgian Town Hall and Victorian facades. The shopping tradition has kept pace with changing times and today the many markets and specialty shops combine the needs of modern day living with an array of modern shops, cafes and restaurants.

The famous Curtis Museum, a must-visit, has one of the finest local history collections in Hampshire, the beautiful parish church of St. Lawrence and the Allen Gallery with its charming walled garden provides a peaceful retreat in the middle of town. Nearby, are villages of interest such as Chawton, the home of Jane Austin and Selborne the residence of Gilbert White the world-renowned naturalist.

The spectacular Watercress Line Steam Railway, so called because it was previously used to transport fresh watercress to market in London, is today manned by a dedicated team of volunteers and employees. The restored steam railway is one of Hampshire's leading tourist attractions, carrying 120,000 passengers a year on the four stops between Alresford and Alton.
